Stonewool insulation is fire-resistant, sound-absorbing, and energy-efficient. I ran the numbers—here's what you need to know before buying.

I spent last weekend rerouting ductwork in my 1920s attic. Tim handed me a roll of fiberglass and said, “This is fine.” I looked at the gaps between the ceiling joists—not a single one was a standard width—and said, “No, it’s not.” That’s when I started measuring everything again. And that’s how I ended up writing an actual spreadsheet comparing stonewool insulation to every other batt on the market.

If you own an old house, you already know: nothing is square, nothing is plumb, and the insulation that worked in the 1970s is probably rodent-nest material by now. Stonewool insulation promises fire resistance, soundproofing, and moisture control. But does it deliver where it counts? I tested it in my own attic and ran the numbers. Spoiler: it’s not perfect, but it’s better than fiberglass in almost every way that matters.

What Is Stonewool Insulation?

Stonewool insulation (also called mineral wool or rock wool) is made from basalt rock and recycled slag, melted at around 2,900°F, then spun into fibers. It comes as batts or loose fill. The key specs: R-value per inch is about 4.0 to 4.3—slightly better than fiberglass’s 3.7 to 4.3, but more consistent because stonewool doesn’t settle as much over time.

I installed R-23 batts in my attic’s 2×6 cavities. The material is stiff—think bread loaf texture—so it stays put without stapling. That’s a big deal when you’re working overhead in a 120°F attic with a headlamp. No fibers floating into your lungs, either. Stonewool is naturally non-combustible, which I’ll get to in a second.

The Fire Resistance Numbers

Here’s the stat that made me switch: stonewool insulation can withstand temperatures above 2,150°F without melting. Fiberglass melts at around 1,100°F. In a house fire, that extra 1,000 degrees buys you time—minutes, at least—for fire crews to arrive. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) data I found suggests that non-combustible insulation can slow fire spread through walls by 30–45 minutes. I’ll take any edge I can get with knob-and-tube wiring still lurking in my walls.

I also tested a small sample with a propane torch (safely, in the driveway). The stonewool didn’t ignite. It just sat there, glowing a little, then went dark. The fiberglass scrap I held next to it melted into a sad beaded string in about 15 seconds. That sealed it for me.

Soundproofing: Does It Actually Work?

Stonewool’s density is about 2.7 lb/ft³ versus fiberglass’s 0.5–1.0 lb/ft³. That mass absorbs sound waves more effectively. In my attic, I stuffed stonewool between the bedroom ceiling and the living room below. Before: I could hear Tim watching football from two floors up. After: I still hear the subwoofer a little, but normal conversation is completely gone.

For interior walls, the STC (Sound Transmission Class) improvement with stonewool is typically 5–10 points over fiberglass. That’s the difference between hearing a toilet flush and not knowing if anyone’s in the bathroom. If you have kids, or a spouse who does Zoom calls at 6 a.m., this matters.

How It Compares to Fiberglass (Cost vs. Performance)

I price-checked three stores. Stonewool batt prices run about $0.60–$0.80 per square foot for R-23. Fiberglass is $0.35–$0.55. So stonewool costs roughly 40% more upfront. But here’s the math I ran: stonewool doesn’t sag or settle, so its R-value stays consistent for the life of the house. Fiberglass loses about 5% of its R-value per decade from settling, dust, and moisture. Over 30 years, that’s a 15% performance drop. Stonewool also repels water—it won’t absorb moisture and lose insulating power—and it doesn’t grow mold. In my old house with its occasional roof leak, that’s a $300-mistake-avoided guarantee.

Long-term cost: I calculated a 7-year payback on the premium for an average 1,500 sq ft attic. After that, I’m saving money because my heating bills are lower and my AC runs less. I track my monthly kWh in a spreadsheet (yes, I’m that person). My attic retrofit cut July cooling costs by about 18%—from $187 to $153.

Installation Gotchas

Stonewool is not as forgiving as fiberglass for cutting. It’s dense, so a sharp utility knife is mandatory—dull blades rip the fibers into a mess. Wear a P100 respirator anyway, because the dust is a mechanical irritant to eyes and throat (even though it’s not carcinogenic like fiberglass). I learned that the hard way after an hour of cutting without a mask.

Also, stonewool batts are friction-fit, which means they must be exactly the width of the cavity. If your studs are 24 inches on center, the batt must be 23 inches wide. Cutting them to fit around electrical boxes is tedious—I recommend a serrated drywall saw blade. My first two cuts looked like a toddler traced them. Trust the tape, not your eye.

The Final Formula

If your house is pre-1980, has non-standard cavity widths, or has any moisture history, stonewool insulation is the logical choice. The upfront cost stings, but the fire safety, sound deadening, and thermal stability are measurable benefits. For new construction with perfectly spaced studs and a low-moisture risk, fiberglass is fine—save your money. But for the rest of us living in century homes with mystery wires and wonky corners, stonewool is the answer.

I’ve now insulated three attics and two interior walls with stonewool. My spreadsheet says it’s a 7.2/10 in value—higher than fiberglass’s 5.8 because of the long-term durability. Trust the tape, not your eye. And buy a good mask.
