Choose the Right Fill for the Wall You Have

Not every wall wants the same material. Fiberglass batts are common and inexpensive, but they only work well when the cavity is standard-sized and the install is neat. In an old house, that is not always the case. Stud bays may be irregular, wiring may be crowded, and plaster keys may make the cavity narrower than you expect. Dense-pack cellulose does better in those messy situations because it can fill odd spaces and reduce convective looping inside the wall. It is often the sweet spot for retrofits when the wall is staying intact.

Spray foam has its place too. Closed-cell foam gives a higher R-value per inch and can air seal as it goes, which is useful in tight cavities or problem areas near rim joists. It also costs more — often several dollars per square foot installed, sometimes more when access is awkward. Open-cell foam is cheaper and good at air sealing, but it is not the answer for every climate or wall assembly. If you are pricing by the square foot, dense-pack cellulose often lands in the low single digits per square foot, fiberglass can be a little less on materials but more variable once labor is included, and spray foam climbs fast when the wall is full of surprises.

The easiest way to overspend is to buy the fanciest material before you know what the wall can actually accept. If your budget is tight, prioritize the coldest walls, the rooms you use every day, and the areas that feel drafty even when the heat is running. A bedroom over a crawlspace or a north-facing office usually gives you the clearest before-and-after result.

When you are calling contractors, ask for the insulation type, the square-foot price, the air-sealing line item, and the plan for access holes and patching. If a quote is vague, keep shopping. The difference between a careful job and a sloppy one is rarely just the material — it is the prep. On a typical retrofit, you might see dense-pack work land around the low-to-mid single digits per square foot, with spray foam higher and exterior re-siding plus continuous insulation much higher because carpentry gets involved.

The final test is simple. Stand in the room on a cold day, touch the wall, and compare it to the old version in your head. If the room feels calmer, less drafty, and more even from corner to corner, you did it right.
